WW'nTips-n-Tricks #101: Headgear for Woodturners
Besides a safety helmet when needed there are other reasons why a woodturner would want to wear head gear. And it's not just to look like a crazy old codger in the woodshop. In this video we discuss the merits of a welding cap.
There are lots of different styles and colors of welding caps so find one that fits your personality. Most are between $5 - $20. Of all the ones I've tried here is the one I like the best. It's heavy weight cotton and "fitted": amzn.to/3ViUXhq

Storing turning tools, especially gouges and chucks, is hard. I've tried several techniques in the past as has my father. There are issues with all. Is this a Radical New Bench Design for Green Woodworking or Idiocy?
Просмотров 13 тыс.5 месяцев назад
Sometimes you get a design idea and need to make a prototype before anything else in your life can proceed. I had a new idea of a workbench, a work surface. One that is portable and will replace a standing bench, shave horse and spoon mule. Will it work? How can it be improved? Should it be burned? Budget Gift Ideas for Woodworkers / Crafters / DIY

Coming up with your own ideas for gifts that a woodworker, craft person, or DIY 'er would actually want and use is hard. Especially if you are on a budget. Here are a dozen ideas plus a bonus that woodworkers like me would love and use. ERROR IN VIDEO: I misspoke in that Lee Valley bought Hock Tools not Lie-Nielsen. I have no excuse as I wrote a blog post on this purchase a few months ago. Clue...
Texas Furniture Maker Show 2023 - Kerrville, TX

The Texas Furniture Maker Show in Kerrville, TX is a pilgrimage of inspiration for me each year and 2023 was no different. I've been going to them for about 9 years now (links to to the four previous ones I documented are below) and each year I sneak away a few more ideas I can incorporate into future projects. This year I seem to be on a tactile kick and seeing stuff here brought that into a l...
Open Tote Tool Box / Caddy - Design Utility Tour
Просмотров 10 тыс.7 месяцев назад
A tour of one of the first projects I was really proud of, an open tote toolbox. I like this design because of it's function. Easy to make for beginners as this example was made by a beginner (me many years ago). Used only bought material so no thickness planing or resizing. I'd always planned on building a cabinet that would hold less used tools that'd go under this tote and roll around the sh...

Bruised wood is imperceptible until you apply finish, and then it's too late. Lines induced by crushed fibers are something you'll fight against once you pass the beginner stage of the craft. It's a sign of grown, skill, and artistry. Today's tip is identifying the problem and exploring solutions. HandWorks 2023 in Amana, IA: Is it the best hand tool show on earth?

HandWorks ( handworks.co/ ) was the first weekend in September 2023. A gathering of the best manufacturers and boutique makers of woodworking hand tools from all over the planet. Woodturning Symposium - Southwest Association of Turners (SWAT) 2023 in Waco, TX

Every year I like to go to SWAT. Even years like this where I can't afford a ticket to attend the classes. Because the comradery, inspiration, insight, and drooling that takes place in the free areas of the event (vendor displays and pop up art gallery) work as a creative battery recharge for me. So enjoy my experience documentation of the 2023 SWAT Woodturning Symposium. And sorry for a few mi...
Wire a Utility-Trailer / Camper / Teardrop plus your Tow Vehicle Yourself
Просмотров 2,9 тыс.8 месяцев назад
I'm building a teardrop camper on a DIY trailer. There is a lot of information/videos on "wiring a trailer" but what almost all are discussing is replacing or rewiring the lights on a trailer or the plug. I struggled to find the basic information on starting from scratch on a trailer and wiring it for lights and brakes. Plus the needed wiring for a tow vehicle. So that's the motivation for this...
The Quality of the Products You Make Depends Upon the Material You Select - Production Tool Tips Too

I love how you and your dad work together. It makes a tight bond. My dad and I used to do projects like this until he passed away. God, I miss those times. Cherish your dad like every day may be your last. ♥
Thanks. When did you switch to a robust lathe and why
Hey Bob am I communicating here? I can't tell it feels like I am. Hey does that make me the Teacher? Having a two way communication that Transcends time.
I have watched a billion hours of workbenches and this is the best one so far. Kudos and huge huge thank you!
Why didn't you nail the 2 by 6 or 2 by 8 together and then put the 4 x 4 inside where are the 2 by 6 or 2 by 8 was it would would have reinforced it much more Indiana would have made it stronger 💪💪💪💪 that is a weaker building
judging by the generic name with numbers & incoherent writing adjacent to the topic I'm guessing... bot.
Pallets make great strawberry towers.
Love all your videos but the little gems of cheap and easy are definitely my favorites I wonder if you could use a plug cutter to speed up the process for making the tenon & remove any potential for failure. Could be worth a try if you haven’t!
But here you are using it…lol. I hate it but I use it. Pick a side dude
My grandfather was a blacksmith, pre WW1, and as a child I learned how wagon wheels are made. You used that technique with that ferrule. Thanks for sharing!
I have watched you guys a few times and I am gonna build my shed very soon. (Saved money for supplies). You guys help me understand the process and how to take my time and just get it done. Thank you very much for the great video and details.
You can square a drywall square a bit similarly to the carpenter square, but instead of going diagonally with your score line go straight across the base of the t. As long as the reference edge (the one hook on the drywall edge) isn't bent, you can adjust the longer edge. But you do have to support the reference edge up so as not to bend the square into a taco lol.
I’ve never used my super skinny parting tool on a powered lathe; I do almost almost all of my turning on a springpole lathe. That parting tool is dynamite on green wood!
T1 11 ARE 45 now 4yrs later
Also a good time to give credit to Jim Kingshott for his original design of a micro adjustable gauge. Glen Drakes first iteration was a knockoff of Kingshott’s and then progressed from there.
I like making my own tools and of course tool handles. Favorite wood for handles: Osage Orange. Big enough chucks can be found around here being sold as firewood. You can also find the South American relative usually called Argentine Osage. Don't buy the Guatemalan "Mora" It's not the same. Walnut is my least favorite material. Too soft, stains my hands. Copper or brass tube & fittings are easily made into ferrules. Put a slight bevel on the inside so they can be driven onto the handle. Tool steel is available online in a wide variety of sizes. Generally available in an easily machined state and can be hardened & tempered to suite after shaping. Water, oil and air hardening varieties are available. I use O-1. Tempering can often be done using your wife's oven (when she isn't looking.) If you are a scrounger, Cheap!, you can use leaf springs or even coils if you have a basic forge. LP tube forges can be made easily or purchased. Push the limits & have fun.
Well produced and presented.
This was my first workbench build and it turned out great! QUESTION: if I built another one, but it was 5' x 6' (to hold a CNC) would I need to add center supports, or center posts/legs, to keep it from sagging? Or, would the 2x4 stretchers along with the metal Simpson corner brackets keep it from sagging?
I doubt you’d even need a top. Build the frame to fit the cnc.
@@wortheffort The CNC needs a table to bolt down to, so I'll have to put a sheet of plywood down.
For beginners I’d recommend carbide tools. They have served me well sharpening is harder than turning.
sharpening is the same difficulty as turning. same hand motions. don't believe the marketing messaging from carbide retailers.
Think I would put tin or shingles on top
Hello can you tell me where I can buy a sanding pad like that to use different sandpaper in one pad as seen in 40:07 thanks.
Good video. Do you have a video of taking the pen apart? Sometimes, I make mistakes.
You can't really. It's a compression fit so the brass is expanded. Won't fit as well the second time. Hence figure in a little waste when working out pricing when you batch out hundreds.
"I'm gonna turn this knob that raises it down..."😅
Thanks for the information... I just started turning after a couple years of using dremels, grinders and hand tools to create my carvings. I'm excited for this... and I appreciate the work that people like you put into helping others understand this craft. Take care, friend.
I think it is like a fulcrum of pressure when it is to narrow. Might allow more vibration and expansion on the inside of the wood between grains. When it is longer it has greater grip on wood and shaft. Like when a person, like myself, is waring a thick belt or waistband.
Appreciate your great ideas and instruction.
I like it!!
What speed is a slow grinder.
A couple years ago I turned 120 tops in spindle form. I really learned fine tool control.
Thank you! you showed a lot of ways to do it and the air gun was the best for doing a big pile!
You are incredible person!
Thank you so much for this lesson!
Like the dancing part lol. 😂 But 👍 work.
Does a man even need a grooving plane when he has that mega-chisel?
Thank you. Good practical tips and nicely presented. I love the self effacing style when, actually, you are a natural at construction!
You can also use them as push sticks for wide boards on the table saw.
Impressive - I could never cut a straight line with a hand saw.
i love you dude thanks for all the free help
I worked in a warehouse for over 10 years. I've destroyed probably 100,000 pallets and used their wood to heat my garage and polebarn. The pallets with the square blocks in the corners and center are the best pallets period. They always have great wood and are thicker too. Take a sledge hammer and hit the square block. It will knock it right out and you will have flat panels to work with after that. Easy to get the nails out too when you knock the blocks out.
Shawn’s quote of the day “don’t be afraid to whack it on both sides” 😂😂😂
Thanks for sharing these.
very good demo. I use this system also, but I am also using a laser guide. Helps me find my curve line. Also, I have learned by experience that you need to keep your turret about an inch from the blank face. If too close, the tool won't remain "captured" on the turret. As opposed to the one-way where you get the guide as close as possible to the face of the blank.
CNBC has lost all credibility. They are just trying to help institutions cover their shorts. This always happens when a company the institutions are shorting comes out with a surprise. Also, corporate media hates Elon because his free speech policy undermines their propaganda power. They don't want the average person to have a voice (especially when those voices are exposing their lies) and they are doing their very best to attack the man giving them that platform.
Love to know how much you sell them doe.
Pointless 😂
When you made the template. I left
Most inspiring video👍🏽
Can you share a material list? How many 2 * 4s, plywood, etc? Please! :) Love the video!
You really asking a teacher to do the math for you?
As to texturing tools, a chatter tool might do just as well with a bit of practice. I'm going to try to make me one. Also Everyone's opinion counts in woodworking. That goes for Dad's, Son's, Mom's and Daughters.
Better than a popsicle stick for spreading glue are unused plastic picnic knives. Not only can spread glue but the teeth provide a measured layer of glue.
I am an amateur and desiring to build the workbench did three years ago. Can you forward to me the 4 x 4 post bracket that you found on Amazon?
I would suggest googling Simpson 4x4 bracket to find a retailer near you that sells them. Links are in description. Or go straight to Simpson to order.
